PUNJAB knowledge . old names of Punjab and river

1.    Punjab name is combination of two names PUNJ + AAB . 

2.    Where  PUNJ means five (5) and AAB means Water (represent to five rivers )

3.Punjab used to be known as various names these are ;-

1.The oldest name was -  Brahm Brata  

2.During the epic period ( Ramayana & Mahabharta ) it was known as –Panchnad

 

3.During the vedic  period – Sapta Sindhu

 

4.Alexander Cunningham (first Director- General of Archaeological Survey of India in 1861)  in his book 'Ancient Geography of India'  refer Punjab as – Takk or  Talti 

  

5.Greeks gave name to Punjab – Penta Potamia 

6.During the period of Maharja Ranjit Singh, Punjab was known as – Suba –e- Lahore .

(official language of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was Persian )

7.After the annexation of the British empire in 1849, Punjab was known as Punjab .
